We do our best to source sustainable and ethically harvested hardwoods grown and processed in the USA. For example, we have some stock of white oak that was end of life and harvested from our front yard. We also acquired some walnut from Wisconsin that otherwise would have been turned into mulch. For all other lumber, we source locally from suppliers that harvest in the USA or even better, local to DC. If there is an exotic species that has your eye, we will find it from an ethical source.

Hardwax oils are fairly new to the market and provide an excellent finish that preserves the natural look of the wood. They add protection but also add versatility when repairing or refinishing is needed. We mostly use Osmo products but will use an alternative upon request. A hand rubbed varnish adds extra protection for hardwearing surfaces and gives a little more depth and sheen to the wood. We like Waterlox as it has been used by experts for well over one hundred years. It is trusted with flooring, antiques, and restorations alike.

Simply put, no. Spray finishes provide excellent protection; however, they tend to leave a plastic look to the wood. Scratches and everyday wear tend to be more apparent in a spray finish and do not patina like an oil finish. There is a time and place for a spray finish, if that is a requirement, let us know and we can plan for it.

Custom furniture is not as expensive as you think. Yes, the more elaborate the design, the price can go up. However, simplicity in design offers straight forward construction leading to lower lead times and more economical sourcing of materials. Styles like Shaker, craftsman, and mid-century modern offer timeless style and value. We have nothing against Ikea, they make a great meatball, but particle board furniture just does not last and eventually ends up in a landfill. Hardwood furniture holds value, is repairable and only gets better with age. Need a repair or restoration? Click here.

Fast furniture fills a niche but aligns with disposable culture. Modern furniture you’ll get from places like Ikea and big box furniture stores are built with profit in mind. Furniture made of particle board, medium density fiberboard, and Formica held together with cheap fasteners often fail and are not repairable. Eventually they end up in landfill, creating a need to buy repeatedly. Custom hardwood furniture is built to last, and done right, will hold its style for generations. Because hardwood furniture lasts, there is less demand to harvest form our pristine forests.

We get it, the price tag of custom furniture can get steep and committing that kind of money can seem overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be! Contact us here whether you’re ready to buy or not, our contact form has an option for general questions. We’d love to discuss options with you and want you to be happy with purchasing a custom piece, an antique, or if fast furniture is for you, we’ll try to point you in the right direction. Well, that is a great question! We try to make the design process as seamless as possible. We understand you might not have everything you want in mind, so we will walk you through our design process and ask questions that give you options rather than a blank slate. This is a guide rather than a constraint. We can always deviate and get creative with the process, that is the point of custom, right?

Whether you are ready to buy a ready-made design or start your custom piece, once you contact us, we’ll guide you through the process. You can read about it here but in summary, we’ll start with a big idea and maybe a sketch (I’m not the best at drawing). Once we nail down some details, we will mockup a computer-aided design and render it to get you a life like look at your piece of furniture. Once a deposit is received, we will begin the construction phase and send you photos throughout the process. Once finished, we will contact you about delivery and any necessary installation. It does not stop there! After some time in your home (about a year or two) we will follow up with for a maintenance wax and at times, fix up a minor life blemish or two. Want to get started?
